Business schools are university-level institutions conferring degrees in business administration or management. These schools can also be known as colleges of business, business colleges, schools of business, colleges of business administration and more. These schools teach such topics as administration, accounting, economics, strategy and much more. There are several well known forms of schools of business including management and business administration. Most of the schools usually are colleges, faculties or departments within a university and teach predominantly business courses. A business school in North America is often understood to be such a university program offering a graduate Master of Business Administration degrees and undergraduate bachelor’s degrees. Also some universities in Both Asia and Europe are specialized in teaching only business. In Europe most of the major schools are owned by the Chambers of Commerce including ESCP Europe founded in 1819. There are and privately owned business colleges which are not affiliated with any university. These schools have long story through the years. The first business school in the world was founded in Paris in 1819 and now has campuses in Paris, Madrid, London, Torino and Berlin. The IEDC-Bled School of Management was the first school to offer an MBA program in Eastern Europe in 1991.

Business schools

Some of the business schools center their teaching around the use of case studies that have been used in both graduate and undergraduate business education for almost one hundred years. Business cases in fact are historical descriptions of actual business situations. Information is presented typically about a business firm’s products, competition, markets, management, employees and other factors that affect the success of a firm. The length of a business case study may range from 2 or 3 pages to 30 pages or even more. The schools obtain often case studies published by the Harvard Business School, The Richard Ivey School of Business and other academic institutions or case clearing houses Students are expected to scrutinize the case study and prepare to discuss both tactics and strategies that the firm should employ in the future. In business case teaching there are three different methods. The first one is prepared case-specific questions to be answered by the students. The underlying concept is that these students need specific guidance to be able to analyze case studies. A generally applicable strategic planning approach is the second method and does not require students to analyze cases. This model is provided and students are instructed to apply the steps of the model to six to a dozen cases during a semester. Problem-solving analyzes is the third and last method. It is initiated by the Harvard Business School and is by far the most widely used method in MBA and executive development programs. The underlying concept is that with enough practice students may develop intuitive skills for both analyzing and resolving complex business situations. On the skills of the discussion leader successful implementation of the method heavily depends. Today all business schools accept students each year because business is one of the most preferred subjects.
